How to prepare for the driving theory test in Ireland
The driving theory test in Ireland is a computer-based exam that every new driver sits before applying for a first learner permit. The category B (car) test has 40 multiple-choice questions. You get 45 minutes and need 35 correct answers to pass. Questions are drawn from five official categories: Control of Vehicle, Legal Matters / Rules of the Road, Managing Risk, Safe and Responsible Driving and Technical Matters. Passing the driver theory test is the first step toward a learner permit and eventually, a full licence.
Good preparation follows a simple order. Begin with theory test practice by category so you can learn one topic at a time and read the explanation behind every answer you get wrong. Your results will show the gaps quickly. Spend extra time on your weakest categories before you move on. Fifteen minutes a day is enough to work through the whole question bank inside a few weeks. Short regular sessions also make the explanations stick far better than one long cram the night before.
Once your category scores are steady, move to full timed runs. Sitting practice mock tests for the category B test gets you used to the clock. A mock theory test in the real 40-question format also shows you what exam day actually feels like. Keep sitting them until you score 38 or higher every time. The pass mark is 35. That buffer means one hard question on the day won't rattle you.
When your mock scores sit reliably above the pass mark, you're ready to book through the official service. You'll need a PPS number and photo ID when you do. For fees and what happens after you pass, read the full theory test guide.
